چکیده

Recently, sparse coding has been successfully applied in visual tracking. The goal of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art tracking methods based on sparse coding. We first analyze the benefits of using sparse coding in visual tracking and then categorize these methods into appearance modeling based on sparse coding (AMSC) and target searching based on sparse representation (TSSR) as well as their combination. For each categorization, we introduce the basic framework and subsequent improvements with emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments to compare the representative methods on a total of 20 test sequences. The experimental results indicate that: (1) AMSC methods significantly outperform TSSR methods. (2) For AMSC methods, both discriminative dictionary and spatial order reserved pooling operators are important for achieving high tracking accuracy. (3) For TSSR methods, the widely used identity pixel basis will degrade the performance when the target or candidate images are not aligned well or severe occlusion occurs. (4) For TSSR methods, ‘1 norm minimization is not necessary. In contrast, ‘2 norm minimization can obtain comparable performance but with lower computational cost. The open questions and future research topics are also discussed. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Face Recognition using an Affine Sparse Coding approach

Sparse coding is an unsupervised method which learns a set of over-complete bases to represent data such as image and video. Sparse coding has increasing attraction for image classification applications in recent years. But in the cases where we have some similar images from different classes, such as face recognition applications, different images may be classified into the same class, and hen...

Image Classification via Sparse Representation and Subspace Alignment

Image representation is a crucial problem in image processing where there exist many low-level representations of image, i.e., SIFT, HOG and so on. But there is a missing link across low-level and high-level semantic representations. In fact, traditional machine learning approaches, e.g., non-negative matrix factorization, sparse representation and principle component analysis are employed to d...

Visual Tracking using Kernel Projected Measurement and Log-Polar Transformation

Visual Servoing is generally contained of control and feature tracking. Study of previous methods shows that no attempt has been made to optimize these two parts together. In kernel based visual servoing method, the main objective is to combine and optimize these two parts together and to make an entire control loop. This main target is accomplished by using Lyapanov theory. A Lyapanov candidat...

Sparse Coding and Counting for Robust Visual Tracking

In this paper, we propose a novel sparse coding and counting method under Bayesian framework for visual tracking. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method employs the combination of L0 and L1 norm to regularize the linear coefficients of incrementally updated linear basis. The sparsity constraint enables the tracker to effectively handle difficult challenges, such as occlusion or im...

Robust Pedestrian Tracking and Recognition from FLIR Video: A Unified Approach via Sparse Coding

Sparse coding is an emerging method that has been successfully applied to both robust object tracking and recognition in the vision literature. In this paper, we propose to explore a sparse coding-based approach toward joint object tracking-and-recognition and explore its potential in the analysis of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) video to support nighttime machine vision systems. A key techni...
